We've all been there. A doctor gives a diagnosis, and suddenly we have a choice. We accept that life will always be as the doctor has said it will be, or we choose to do something about it.
I was recently pondering the same question regarding a diagnosis I'd been given, and my 10-year-old daughter brought me a picture she had drawn, saying: "Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me."
I'm going to be transparent with you all. My first year of working at The Mercy Ministries was difficult for me! It was my first real job back after a 5.5 year battle with Lyme Disease. My body was getting stronger each day, and my brain was, too. It still had a long ways to go, however. Some days I would be given an assignment and I struggled to understand the assignment, or to have the focus to complete it. Some days I was terrified my coworkers would realize how much I was struggling and be disappointed in me.
I was sitting at my desk one day in tears crying to God, "I know You told me to take this job and You put me here. I'm just not sure I can do this!" and God replied back, "Fake it till you make it, but do NOT give up! You don't let your brain tell you what it can and can't do. You tell your brain what to do!"
"Fake it till you make it, be bossy to my brain ..." I thought. "I'm good at bossy. I can do that!"
It's funny now, but at the time I was genuinely terrified I was never going to get better and I was going to fail everyone around me.
But, I dried my tears, set my face like flint and made a decision to give this job 110%, just as I had always done with any assignment. I would do the best I could and God would have to fill in the gaps and do the rest. And, you know what? He did! Most days at first were really hard, but He always made a way where there seemed no way! Somehow everything was always done, and it was done well. Our team met it's financial goals and the ministry continues to thrive. (And, I discovered I have some really patient, loving, caring Mercy team members who truly walk in the Fruits of the Spirit daily).
It didn't happen immediately, but several months into this job ... suddenly ... everything became easy, second nature, effortless almost! It was like someone finally flipped the light switch in my brain. I could see, hear and understand clearly what was being asked of me, what I needed to do, and I also noticed I began remembering things without having to write them all down. After an almost 7 year battle, I had my brain back!
I'm being transparent about this personal struggle because we all have our own struggles. Our Mercy patients and Mercy University students have their own struggles. Pastors have their own struggles. The rich have their own struggles. The poor have their own struggles.
And, another thing we all have in common ... we all have a choice to make. We can let our circumstances tell us how things are going to be, or we tell our circumstances how things are going to be. We can feel sorry for ourselves and give up, or we can obey God and trust in His timing and His faithfulness to heal and restore our minds, bodies, finances and relationships! Four things we all need to be healthy, thriving human beings.
I've been particularly inspired by this video of "The Woman Who Changed Her Brain."
Please watch it!
She and I are living testimonies that we do not have to accept a given diagnosis or circumstance! It's true, no one is going to change your life. Only you have the power to do that. However, when you step out in faith to make some changes, God will partner with you to complete the job. Here at TMM we believe that!
If you will KEEP MOVING FORWARD ... do the work, take the classes, posture yourself in an attitude of "I'm here to learn and grow," and continue to ask God to place you in environments where you can thrive, He will meet you there and heal you everywhere you hurt!
and if My people, who are called by My Name, humble themselves, and pray and seek (crave, require as a necessity) My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear [them] from heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land.
2 Chron. 7:14
"Land" in that scripture is something owned by the people. We own our bodies, our minds, our debts. When we turn our lives over to Christ and give Him ownership, He teaches us how to walk in authority and healing. He teaches us how to be the boss of our own circumstances!
TMM believes God's Word is for today, for us, and not just for those who lived in Biblical times. So, believe this for yourself today:
This is the [remarkable degree of] confidence which we [as believers are entitled to] have before Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, [that is, consistent with His plan and purpose] He hears us. And if we know [for a fact, as indeed we do] that He hears and listens to us in whatever we ask, we [also] know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that we have [granted to us] the requests which we have asked from Him.
1 John 5:14-15 AMP
Behold, [in the restored Jerusalem] I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them; and I will reveal to them an abundance of peace (prosperity, security, stability) and truth.
